Working Memory & Attention Training

For Children & Adults

Cogmed is a scientifically proven training program recommended for children and adults with attention and working memory problems. The training is conducted under a supervision of a licensed psychologist.

Cogmed is offered for school-age children (RM module) and adults (QM module). It has been effectively used with the general population as well as in individuals with ADHD, working memory deficits due to learning disability, cochlear implants, stroke, acquired brain injury, etc. If you or your child have difficulty concentrating, ignoring irrelevant information, holding several chunks of information in mind, planning and organizing, getting started and staying on task, then Cogmed training can be helpful in resolving these issues. We have many years of experience working with children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and memory training has proven to be especially effective for ADHD children and young adults.

Recent metanalysis (based on 36 research studies) published in "Nature" magazine by European ADHD Guidelines Group (EAGG) suggests that Cogmed training can lead to significant improvement in ADHD-related attention symptoms.[Westwood et al. 2023]

Introducing Cogmed Working Memory Training

TRAINING PHASES

Cogmed training is only available through professional channels and is delivered through a worldwide network of Qualified Cogmed Practives.

The training consists of the following phases:

  • Initial interview: We schedule a session with the person interested in going through the program (or the parent if it is a child) to evaluate how he or she might benefit from the training.
  • Start-up session: We plan and structure the training together with the participant/family.
  • Five weeks of training with weekly coach calls: The participant trains at home, progressing through five 30-45 minute sessions each week. The Cogmed Coach talks to the participant on a weekly basis to provide advice on how to get the most out of the training, give feedback, and motivate progress.
  • Access to the cogmed training web: Both the user and the Cogmed Coach review and monitor the results of each day's training, using our online system.
  • Wrap-up session: One month after the training is complete, we summarize the training with the participant and provide feedback data from the Cogmed rating scales.
  • Six month follow-up interview: We re-evaluate the effects of the training, now that more time has elapsed and the effects have fully emerged.
  • Cogmed extension training: The user gets access to 100 more sessions of training with the software, to use over a 12-month period following the completion of the five-week training period. Cogmed Extension Training is optional.

We have many years of experience working with children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and memory training has proven to be especially effective for ADHD children and young adults. Cogmed is a proven working memory training system and its effectiveness is backed by over 30 independent, controlled research studies done at leading universities around the world.

Several empirical studies suggest that Cogmed-induced increases in working memory capacity can also be accompanied by improvements in fluid intelligence ( [Jaeggi et al., 2008] , [Jaeggi et al., 2011] and [Klingberg et al., 2005] ), reading comprehension ( [Chein and Morrison, 2010] and [Dahlin, 2010] ), math competence [Holmes, Gathercole, & Dunning, 2009] , and ADHD symptoms ( [Gibson et al., 2011] , [Holmes et al., 2010] and [Klingberg et al., 2005] ).

The training is only available through professional channels and is delivered through a worldwide network of Qualified Cogmed Practices. The training is always led by a Cogmed Qualified Coach who works with the user to structure training and ensure the proper use of the program to achieve the best possible results. The Cogmed training method consists of 25 computerized training sessions, each 30-45 minutes long. Each session consists of a selection of various tasks that target the different aspects of working memory. The training is done on a computer with the assistance of a Training Aid (for children) and a Cogmed Coach. The training program is five weeks long with five sessions every week. During training, the user's performance is tracked online and can be viewed by the user and his/her Cogmed Coach who communicates with the user throughout the five weeks to assist him/her through the program. It is a rigorous and effective program designed to improve working memory through intensive and systematic training.

Cogmed course was built in collaboration with professional game developers, so it combines cognitive neuroscience with educational computer game approach. All tasks are organized as series of video game episodes focusing on different aspects of working memory.
